All worthy nominees. But shocked that the ladies rugby team didn't get a nomination. First (ever or in a long long time?) to beat New Zealand, and punched will beyond expectations given it was often amateurs v professionals.

Anyone know if these are voted on by the public or are they "selected" by a panel?

The rugby team will get it due to the current hard on that the media have for them.

The rugby team will get it due to the current hard on that the media have for them. Seriously? Will they not just win it because they would be worthy winners? They would get my vote. The media didn't win them the six nations or wins over South Africa and Australia or get them to 3rd in the world. They only lost one game in 2015 and that was away to England.

I'm not sure how old this award is but have Kerry ever won it? I doubt it somehow.

The rugby team will get it due to the current hard on that the media have for them. If this is true, then what about it? It's justified by their achievements.

A new young transitional Kerry team, with a young manager, that went up to Croke Park and won an All-Ireland has to be strongly in the reckoning.

Worthy winners would be the Irish rugby team men's with the women team second. To be fair to Kerry they did fantastic to win the AI but lets be honest they avoided Dublin and outside of the big 4 (Kerry Dublin Donegal Mayo) there is not much by way of competition in the football.

Given your logic that pro-rugby = "posh brigade"....could Currow than be considered the "posh" part of Kerry???!!! lol Given it's fine contribution to Irish rugby.

Also worth noting that more people watched the six nations final game V France than watched the All Ireland final. Are all of that 800k plus audience part of the posh brigade too? Currow on the other hand is fierce posh! Awful notions by that lot Look, all it is is an award that means nothing but generates fun debate. I'm as passionate about Kerry football as the next man but it does not mean I'm blind to the achievements of other teams in other sports.

Tell me, what Kerrymen played with Ireland down the years and who were from Currow, and as opposed to Castleisland? I suppose we can throw in Houlihan as the 16th man, the man wiring his story from behind the wire! Ah be jazus I'm fierce funny of a Sunday mornin! Those viewing figures are interesting, animal asserts that more watched rugby vs Frogs that AI final? How much bigger are AI viewers when Dubs are on show I wonder? I wouldn't begrudge the winners regardless as to who it is, Sam will do fine thanks!

God-fecking-awful stuff. The treatment of Gaelic games by the folk in Donnybrook continues to be abysmal. With each passing day I think the GAA should set up their own TV channel.

Rory McIlroy has been named RTÉ Sport Sports Person of the Year for the second time.
It was a remarkable year for the golf world number one, which included winning two Majors, the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool and the PGA Championship at Valhalla.
He also played a leading role in Europe’s Ryder Cup victory.
The Team of the Year, chosen by public vote, was the All-Ireland winning Cork Ladies Football team.
The Rebelettes have won an incredible nine of the last ten All-Ireland titles.
Irish rugby coach Joe Schmidt was named the winner of the RTÉ Sport Manager of the Year.
Having started 2014 by guiding Ireland to RBS Six Nations glory, Schmidt saw his side go on to end the year unbeaten with wins over South Africa, Australia and Georgia and with a highest ever ranking of third in the world. As well as acknowledging this year’s sporting achievements, the RTÉ Sport Awards also paid tribute to one of Ireland’s greatest sporting legends.
Recently retired Irish rugby legend Brian O’Driscoll was honoured with the RTÉ/Irish Sports Council Hall of Fame Award.
During a stellar career in which he became the most-capped player in rugby union history, Brian captained Leinster, Ireland and the British and Irish Lions, winning the RBS Six Nations twice and the Heineken Cup three times along the way.

RTE must be sickened that the public chose to give it to the ladies team, as opposed to their beloved Rugby team.
delighted, it was turning into a rigby w*nkfest for the first hour, giving the manager one to Joe Smidth or however the f*ck its spelt, was a joke.

Last night showed them up for what they are. A rugby tv station. The coverage they gave last night was dominated by Rugby. No wonder when that clown Nugent is running the sports department.

wow did you guys ever consider that maybe ye are anti Rugby, rather than RTE being pro-rugby? Because that's how it's coming across.
The awards were pretty fair across the board, Joe deserved his award, it was only between him and Eamon in my view. Rory was a no brainer, heard some supposed sports fans disgruntled it wasn't star. But fact is if Rory had any better a year, than it would have been a Tiger/Jack year and he'd have to be considered one of the greatest sportstars of all time! lol An Irish sports award is justified!
9 AI's in 10 years says it all about the Cork ladies, well deserved award, and they have a great manager leading them; I wonder was there ever an attempt to get him to switch allegiance to the mens side over the past decade?

There should be an award for amateur team of the year and a separate award for professional team of the year. Comparing amateur and professional is ridiculous. By and large the Irish Rugby side have tended to bottle it when it mattered over the past ten years. Too many ifs, buts and maybes for my liking.
I don't the big deal about professional sportspeople excelling at their job no more that any other professional....be it a barrister or surgeon or whatever. Its their job. They get paid for it. Whats the big deal.
For me, the real heroes are amateurs who must get up for work on Monday after representing their club, parish or county on Sunday. If they are also dual players representing their club or county in both codes, then they stand alone in my book.
