"Armagh giants Crossmaglen inflicted a 1-08 to 0-00 defeat on a makeshift Dromintee side in a surreal club championship encounter at the Athletic Grounds on Friday night. A number of players in the hastily-assembled Dromintee line-up opted to wear jeans and shoes in the fixture against the six-time All-Ireland champions. Crossmaglen cantered to a comfortable 1-07 to 0-00 lead inside 10 minutes, as Dromintee’s rather too mature side predictably struggled without a whole host of regular starters who were attending a local wedding. The match descended into more abject farce when Crossmaglen elected to treat the remainder of the match as an impromptu training session, with Dromintee engaging in an aimless kickabout. Dromintee’s failed in a bid to have the match rescheduled and their motives for completing the fixture are thought to have stemmed from a fear of incurring a 48-week ban from all competitions at all levels if they failed to do so."

Jim McGuinness wouldn't be impressed with that. There's pictures of oul lads in jeans on the pitch.

I'm not sure he could carry off the role in skinny jeans, but he could play his da Matt Damon and Adam Sandler as Cross managers John McEntee and Oisin McConville, me thinks.

WOW, funny and all as this is, if I was GAA top brass I'd be seriously concerned about something like this happening. Hugely worrying what's happening at club level now.

At one point, while the Dromintee "team" were having their kickaround (officially they were playing the match), the ball went over the sideline. The ref had to summon a Cross player away from their training session to take the sideline ball so the "match" could resume.
Question : The oul lads were on the pitch to fulfill the fixture so as to avoid a suspension for the club. I can't imagine they could have all been registered as players in the squad. Would Dromintee not be in equally serious breach of the rules for fielding possibly up to 15 illegals ?

Oisin McConville quotes are from his appearance on the Second Captains
The phone conversation stuff falls into the category of stuff you couldnt make up.
Seems like the threatened punishment was way too harsh - potentially stopping kids from playing football because an adult team don't fulfill a fixture is insane stuff. I've no problem with the county board punishing the team that doesn't play (if they didnt have a punishment for teams not fulfilling fixtures there would never be a county championship in the land completed) but even talking about punishing young lads is way ott imo.
