ah come on, that kind of sums up what your saying really!!! No pressure on Mayo so? Ye are favourites the next day; runners up last year; all players available (Gouch ain't making an appearance for us the next day); ye've been building for an AI for ~3years now; should have won an AI last year and this is seen as yer last chance, whereas we are seen as being in a sort of transitional period. So I'm afraid all the pressure is on Mayo...but maybe your only saying otherwise because you fear what the pressure will do to yer players (forwards in particular!!) again!!! Surely one of ye knows this is EF's second year?? I'm not going to criticise the guy because he thought it was 3 years instead of 2! I have no idea how long James Horan is in the job, and if I guessed wrong I wouldn't expect criticism for it.

Well lads ye'd do well not to go too hard on my county man there "Mayo4Sam" (I presume he is my county man, and not some Rossie trying to stir it up which has been known to happen, theres some awful blaggards across the border). Some of our number are a bit over enthusiastic and unfortunately, despite the long road we've been on, still lose the run of themselves from time to time. James Horan is in his 4th, and I believe, final year. Some said he should have finished last year but I suppose what do we know firstly, and secondly, tis hard to know what else is out there. Given our county board wanted Tommy Lyons,(not the Crossmolina Tommy Lyons who won the club all ireland with Crossmolina all those years ago unfortunately, but the Dubs Tommy Lyons who apparently is from Mayo having spent a fortnight in Foxford once upon a time) we wouldnt be too confident of what they will come up with next. So what of Sunday, tis hard to know. As yer man Bono might have paraphrased about Mayo within the county, theres been alot of talk about the team this year, maybe, maybe too much talk - about peaking at certain times, and not peaking in other games, "timing the run" and all that. I dunno, certainly at the end of the day when the canister was being handed over, our performance for the ages against Donegal in the quarters counted for nothing. one to pull out on some wet November night in 10 years time when we are all around the fire maybe, but not more than that. We have had a record of blowing teams away in quarters the last 3 years so maybe this year they were trying something different. People have alluded to it already, but the winning of this game is on the sideline. James Horan has done fantastic work, he has brought this team from a qualifier loss against Longford in 2010 to take it over and make them into arguably the most consistent team over the past 3 years. However, tactically he cannot seem to make changes on the line to really influence a game and even outside that, has been caught out on the big day by being out thought from the other side of the field. 2012, to me is definelty the one that got away, and that day he gambled by putting Kevin Keane on Michael Murphy. Now Kevin is a fine footballer, a great man marker and has a serious engine. BUt it would only work if Mr Murphy continued his frolicking out the field that he had been doing all year, and Kevin would try and frustrate him. Jimmy McGuinness must have looked at the 2004 and 2006 final tapes and said sure I'll try the high ball. Michael stood on the edge of the square and for the first few minutes Donegal bombed a few down on him. Now the issue here is not that James didnt see this beforehand, but that he didnt react when Donegal were trying it. There was time to save that game but by the time anything was done, the damage was done and the game was effectively over. Now credit the lads, they fought back well and I distinctly remember Donegal people being quiet uncomfortable coming up to half time as we ate into the lead and started to come back. Anyway the rest is history. Our full back line has good players in it, but any full back line will be uncomfortable if left man for man on quality forwards with no protection. We have been trying to play higher up the field with a view to playing Dublin which is obviously a dangerous proposition when you have to get over the likes of Cork (who have the players but are damned with an incompetent manager) and of course Kerry. However, I suppose if a man sets out his goal to try and get another crack at playing the champions he'd be mad if he didnt try something different until 3 weeks before the final. Ger Cafferky is much maligned at times, but it you analyse the game against Cork, all of Hurley's scores came when Ger had been switched off him to try and deal with Colum O'Neill which he did quiet well on again. Chris Barrett has been the weak link, hes been coming back from injury, if he starts this would be his third game, can he get back to his form of last year? I dont know, but if he matches up against JOD with no protection then we are in trouble. So I think ye have an advantage on the line. However, to be fair what James Horan has done this year, is keep opposition managers guessing. Will AOS start at 11 again (I think he will) with maybe Jason Gibbons coming into midield, we have an embarrassment of riches around that area with Barry Moran an option also (why Barry was'nt put into full forward against Dublin for the last 10 minutes last year I'll never know). I'm not sure the Donal Vaughan experiment worked even though he did wellish against Cork in the second half. Tom Cunnife has to start so perhaps we will see him for Barrett. So it may not be that easy for MF to figure out how to beat Mayo but I imagine he will probably be focusing on his own teams strengths rather than being too worried about Mayo particularly. My big concern is the fact that we tend to go to sleep for 10 - 15 minutes of a match this year, not sure why that is. Yes, every team gets on top for a while but we seem to completley switch off. If we do that then its probably curtains. Anyway, I reckon it will be a good game but unfortunately we might be both playing for the runners up medals this year and personally I'm not sure that's a proposition I can stomach again for the third year in a row.

Ah come on K Man in fairness. Yes Fitz has done a few things tactically well but when it really mattered in the second half of the Semi last year the line was clueless. Yes Buckley is still with Mayo, he's responsible for their ability to turn over possession. On another note, I've seen several posters claim that Kerry were wiped out at midfield v Galway. Kerry actually broke even lads and Galway actually won a fair bit of ball v Mayo too. Watch the start of that game, Galway wasted as many chances at the start v Mayo as they did v Kerry. My main contention is that I simply don't believe in Horan and yeah, the tackling was classic v Donegal last year. What would you have done with us in the 2nd half last year? I wouldn't be sure it was lost from the sideline. Re MF did you know Maher was all strapped up? Yea spotted Maher's shoulder with the heavy strapping after the game, I'm expecting a big game from him Sunday. Well for a start I would have put Donaghy at midfield instead of at full-forward.

Don't really know what to expect from Kerry on Sunday. Realistically our hardest game to date has been from Clare in Ennis followed by Galway in Croke Park. Both team caused us problems in a similar way. By running straight at us and off-loading to a man on the burst at all times. The easy way to stop this is play enough men back to create a screen so that any runner getting the 'pop pass' as it were is going to be bottled up. Very similar to what Donegal do. The difference is Donegal carry a lot of big powerful men who can take and give the hits both on and off the ball to runners. Our half backline wouldn't be able for this. Mahony might but, Killian and Fionn would get killed. Throw in Paul Murphy behind them and we are looking at trouble. I suspect that Eamonn will be bringing back all our 'big men' to do the heavy lifting in this regards around our own half back-line. Depending on selections etc you could see a Kerry defence basically lining up like this on Sunday when Mayo are attacking Marc O Se | Shane Enright | Murphy | Mahony | Declan O'S | Killian | Fionn | Donachadha | Buckley | Sheehan | Moran / Maher | | O'Brien | | O'Donoghue | Geaney |
I think we will look to back the defence and then use pace to move the ball out from the back. Mahony I think will play as the sweeper to sit and hit anything that comes through the middle. Bryan will probably play as our most advanced midfielder so that he can ping the ball into the two lads in the full forward line. If we set up like this on defence and Mayo pour forward as they like to do with their half backs it will leave oceans of space for the 3 forwards to run into and take on their man. Even if Mayo play with a sweeper he more than likely will sit in front of the full back line leaving 3 mayo men against our two lads inside. That would leave O'Brien 1 v 1 with his man further out the field. Unless Mayo drop another man back to counter this which would mean they would have to sacrifice 2 half backs to cover 3 Kerry forwards. I dont think they will do this as their attacking half backs are their strength. If Mayo do decide to play 2 sweepers in effect it should allow us more time on the ball and to build from the back with Sheehan etc. As I said previously I think we may see more high ball in this game into the kerry forwards than we have for the entire duration of Eamonns term as manager thus far.

I would imagine AOM will be picking up Aidan O Shea on the 40. O'Shea has not great pace and AOM will match him in the physical stakes. Aidan o Shea would eat AOM all day. AOM has lost his pace and power, we will see how ye get on with him the next day. In all fairness ye have lost the gooch which is Massive for Kerry. I dont think ye have enough upfront and overall team for the winning of this game. Mayo by minimum of 3. That is gas, you said Kerry have not enough up front. Paul Geaney, Declan O'Sullivan, James O'Donoghue was the full forward line the last day. All 3 playing mighty stuff and J.O.D has a great chance to get footballer of the year. Granted this will be the biggest test so far this year but a Mayo man shouldn't be coming on here making such statements, especially with previous championship results over the last 10 odd years along with Mayo's uncanny way to find a way to bottle big games. Some people will never learn their lessons. As the saying goes "ignorance is bliss" big talk and nothing to back it up only hard luck stories. Good luck to ya "Mayo4Sam" I hope your pain is helped by coming on here and insulting Kerry and Kerry players. But in the end of the day we have the titles.

Earlier in the thread I expressed the opinion that I find this game to be a fascinating prospect, and was hesitant to call it. I went for Kerry on the basis that even though 1-15 I think Mayo are stronger and further along in their development, Fitzmaurice will read it better than Horan in real time, and act decisively. However, if I was a Kerry supporter one area that would concern me are the match ups, particularly if Higgins takes JOD. Higgins is very experienced, is lightening quick, and very sticky. I would go as far as to say that JOD has never faced a better man marker. If Higgins nullifies this threat, where are Kerry going to get the requisite scores from? I think they need to be getting 18 points plus to win, and it's hard to see them doing that if JOD is held to a point or two. I'd add the caveat that Horan must deploy Higgins on JOD, as he's by far Kerry's most potent weapon, but I'm not altogether sure he will, I wouldn't trust him to make the right call at all. The other issue where Mayo can be got at, and Kerry are famous for this, is to go for the jugular in terms of the opposition's perceived strength(s), in this case Mayo's midfield. In the final last year Aidan O'Shea had the legs run off him by Cluxton constantly pinging it to the wings, making O'Shea cover the ground at a pace he couldn't sustain. Result, O'Shea was wiped out after 50 mins, and it was left to the brother to keep the ship afloat. The negative for Kerry here, as far as my knowledge extends, is that there are no dynamic runners in any of your prospective midfield partnerships that will do the legwork and have O'Shea chasing around the place. Any combination of Maher, Moran, Sheehan and Buckley are all rather static when compared to say MDMA and Cian O'Sullivan. Maybe Fitzmaurice has something up his sleeve here that will involve Mayo not securing as much possession as they'd expect at midfield. I'm nearly looking forward to this one more than Dublin v Donegal, still leaning towards Kerry but only because I view Fitz to be superior to Horan, and I'd trust him to work it out...

I'd say Higgins will pick up JOD alright with a sweeper, maybe their centre back sitting in the pocket. Vaughan seems to be a free agent with a free run of the park from wing back at the moment.

Kerry team to be announced on Thursday night. It has been named on a Tuesday night for every championship game since the Munster Final last year. Makes me suspect that Fitzmaurice might pull a rabbit out of the hat

Tickets available on tickets.ie today, lower Cusack 314. Not sure if you'd class that as decent but there aren't really many bad seats in Croke Park in my opinion.

You mention Declan and James o Donahue who will be marked by 2 all stars, so I won't be to worried. James only scored 3 in the league and one of those was a free. Ye do indeed have the titles but we have the hunger and intensity which is spillanes favourite word at the minute. You will see the intensity of the o Shea lads reigning down and the fear of god in sheehans face when he gets bull dosed out of the way. Mayo by 5 points now kerry4life.

Higgins is the best man fo JOD for sure, class player, on the road a long time now as well though. As good as he is if James gets service, at best Higgins might dilute JOD's to date craftsmanship and at that remove one of Mayo's most dynamic threats in counter attacking. I love that Stephen O is hardly getting a drop of ink, I'm expecting if he's fully fit to cause murder inside in Mayo's backyard. Game itself should go to the wire, and I hope it does, a convincing win either way will bode no good for the final

There used to be an announcement over the tannoy in Croke Park a few years ago..."BEWARE OF PICKPOCKETS". This aptly sums up my fears for Kerry on Sunday.
Too often in recent years we have lost vital scores through being dispossessed in out own half or being caught out badly at the back. I think that its likely that Mayo will garner 1.02 though this.
Can Kerry's forwards make up for this? Maybe they can.
In the Munster final and the QF, the opponents keeper obligingly kept kicking the ball out towards Kerrys dominant midfielder on the day. Unlikely to happen from here on.
If I thought that Kerry could remedy the kamikaze stuff that concedes scores I would be reasonably confident but based on the Galway game, there is no evidence to think that this malady will be resolved by Sunday next.
But hope beats eternal in the human breast. And we are Kerry!

With the team being named Thursday night do many of you foresee a couple of changes?
I can see FM bringing in a player or two to freshen it up in places after Galway game.. Perhaps Crowley is worthy of a start after his good efforts..
With Sheehan more than likely starting, does it mean David Moran will once again start on the bench?
Stephen O'Brien a contender too no doubt..

Where has the summer gone and this championship seems to have moved along at breath taking pace? It some ways it's amazing Kerry made it this far but I think the side of the draw was kind to them - Monaghan or Armagh would have been much sterner tests than Galway. Now Mayo, I don't believe you can judge Sundays game on any games from the past. This is a strong coordinated and athletic team. They may offer too much strength and depth for a young Kerry team. But youth is a strange thing, it has little life experience and knows nothing of risk or fear - one can only hope the youth of Kerry stand up as their past heroes have done so many years over the decades. This should be an exciting match and if Eamon gets his positional and most importantly defensive play in order, Kerry could certainly do the business. Here.s hoping Stephen O Brien shows JOD that he can play as well as him, not to mention a lad called Michael Geaney. It is time now for Maher and Buckley to step it up to the next level. Would love to see the return of a fit and improved KOD - I truly miss his presence in the pitch as in when he was playing at his best. His energy and enthusiasm alone was wonderful when he was playing at his peak. Finally AOM is past his prime and I am no longer sure he is the man for the backs but we have limited choices so EM has to do the best he can. Here's wishing this young a Kerry team all the best in proving us all that football in Kerry remains eternal.

Some very insightful comments here but I think far too much emphasis is given to dealing with the opposition. In any semi-final you are going to meet a good team but it’s their problem to deal with you. There are constant references to individual Mayo players but if they are that good then it is safe to say the whole is less than the sum of the parts all season.
In approaching the game on Sunday Eamon will have his eye on the bigger picture as much as beating Mayo. Getting out with a win and at the same time trying to go into the final keeping his hand close to his chest. As has been said here he will mix it up. He must start by picking the best team.
I think the 6 backs starting will be Marc, Enright, Murphy, Fitzgerald, Young and Crowley. I know there are 4 players here who are more at home in the half back line but the positions they are listed in are not so important as there will be match ups anyway. We have been good in the wings and corners of defence all season. We need to have a solid presence at centre back – Crowley. There is the perennial problem at full back and Marc will probably step into the breach.
At midfield it will be Maher & Sheehan. Maher may be earmarked for a “man to man” on MDMC if we reach the final and there is no point making major changes for one game. Sheehan effectively hasn’t had a competitive game since the Munster Final and needs a good gallop at this stage. I expect him to put in a hard shift. Moran is very unlucky here.
There are 7 forwards for 6 starting places – 2 Geanys, 2 O’Sullivans, Donnachadh, O’Brien, and O’Donoghue. O’Brien has to start – he needs the game & the experience. James & Declan are automatic choices. For this type of game I think Donnachadh is taylor made so he is in. Paul Geaney has a great understanding with James and also takes some of the attention off of him in the full forward line. He is having a great season and continuity is important so he is in. Darren is struggling all season, fumbled a couple of chances when he came on against Galway so I would give the other spot to Michael Geaney. Johnny Buckley is unlucky here but could be called in early on especially to cover midfield if Sheehan goes forward.
Another thing Eamon could do is put in a player who is showing well in training, could do a specific job very well, would be a player Mayo hadn’t planned for and would send a message to all panel members (subs & starters) for the final. Jonathan Lyne could be that player. He would bring speed and work rate to any of the 4 wing positions. For the Galway game he was next in line after KOL & BJK who have got several chances.

The delaying of the team doesn't make much difference to be honest. Any opposing manager worth his salt will have a plan A,B and C in place for whatever way we set up. Fitzmaurice if he is to go with a massive 'shock' inclusion would be best served to not announce it at all and just send out a dummy team if its so left field that no one expects it. I think the real reason is more prosaic, - Someone is injured and Eamonn wants to give them as much time as possible to recover before naming his team
- Or more worryingly, EF is not sure of his best starting 15 and wants a few days to think it over

Our Mayo/Kerry Dream Team Declan Whooley: Indo The first of the All-Ireland football semi-finals takes place this weekend with Kerry and Mayo clashing in Croke Park. Here is our Dream Team selection from the respective squads. Rob Hennelly (Mayo) Brian Kelly has impressed this year, but Rob Hennelly is the man in possession of the number one jersey. Was fortunate to get his chance last year with injuries to those ahead of him in the pecking order, has not looked back since. One of the best in the business and he produced a brilliant save from Ian Maguire against Cork when the game was back in the melting pot. Full Backs Marc Ó Sé (Kerry) Chris Barrett can consider himself highly unfortunate not to make the fifteen after a stellar season, but the youngest Ó Sé sibling is arguably the finest full-back of his generation. Likely to be given the task of picking up Mayo's dangerman Cillian O'Connor. Ger Cafferky (Mayo) Not at his brilliant best against Cork where the two-man full-forward line of Colm O'Neill and Brian Hurley caused problems, but still a rock in the Mayo defence. A brilliant reader of the game and a formidable physical presence on the edge of the square. Keith Higgins (Mayo) A stand-out performer no matter what number is on his back, the only dilemma for James Horan and his management team is where to place the Ballyhaunis man for the maximum benefit of the team Half Backs Lee Keegan (Mayo) His attacking prowess is well-noted at this stage, but showed his primary duty against the Rebels in the quarter-final. Was given a man-marking task on Paul Kerrigan and kept the Nemo Rangers man relatively quiet for the contest. Will cover every blade of grass again this weekend. Killian Young (Kerry) The Renard man is an often unheralded member of the Kerry team. The holder of three All-Irelands and no All Stars, his value is never over-looked by his team mates. Not as attack-minded as his Mayo counterparts in the half-back line, he is as defensively solid as any centre back remaining in the championship. Another eye-catching Mayo defender, Boyle works tirelessly up and down the pitch. More often the custodian of the number six jersey, he is equally comfortable as a marauding wing-back. Midfield Seamus O'Shea (Mayo) The Breaffy man was outstanding again against Cork and his ability to break up opposition attacks and quickly get Mayo on the front foot has seen the towering midfielder emerge from the shadows of his more profile sibling. One of the most consistent midfielders over the past two seasons. Bryan Sheehan (Kerry) The deadly accurate free-taker limped off early against Galway in the quarter-final, but the classy St. Mary's playmaker showed his pedigree during the demolition of Cork. Often rotated between midfield and the half-forward line, he knocked over three placed balls as well as linking up play throughout with astute use of possession and precision passing. One free in Pairc Ui Chaoimh stood out, sweetly striking the ball from on the sideline near the 21m line. Half Forwards Kevin McLoughlin (Mayo) The secondary school teacher and Irish Rules player is a vital component to James Horan's game plan. His work ethic and stamina complement his reading of the game, rarely wasting possession and a link man between defence and attack. Plays a similar role to the one created by Brian Dooher during his Tyrone career and his style of play will be vital against either Donegal or Dublin should Mayo reach a third successive All-Ireland Final. Aidan O'Shea (Mayo) The all-action player has moved further up-field this season and so far it has worked a treat. Similar to Johnny Buckley for Kerry, O'Shea is almost a third midfielder and his presence on the 40 will curb the attacking threat of the centre-back. A model of composure for Mayo's late goal against Cork that sealed the quarter-final victory. Donnchadh Walsh (Kerry) A player who was often under-appreciated by the general public, but rarely by Kerry managers. To describe Walsh as a workhorse doesn't do service to the intelligence of the Cromane player. If you want a job done in Kerry, ask for Donnchadh Walsh Finally getting the praise he deserves, Walsh goes about his business in an understated manner and he will need to be at his best on Sunday with Mayo's willingness to get forward from the back. Full Forwards Cillian O'Connor (Mayo) It has long been said that Mayo lacked the marquee forward to win an All-Ireland. The two-time Young Footballer of the Year has consigned that argument to the past. The top scorer from the four remaining teams in the hunt for Sam Maguire with 2-23, he is likely to have veteran defender Marc Ó Sé in close attention on Sunday. Declan O'Sullivan (Kerry) With Colm Cooper out injured, perhaps the most naturally gifted footballer in the game. Eamon Fitzmaurice has eased O'Sullivan back into action after niggling injuries and revelled in a deeper role in the Munster Final. Kerry reaping the rewards of their patient approach Centrally involved in the quarter-final defeat of the Tribesmen without overly concerning the umpires, it will be interesting to see whether Ger Cafferky follows the Dromid Pearse's star if he moves out the field. James O'Donoghue (Kerry) Colm who? After an All Star in his debut season, O'Donoghue has moved his game onto another level. Neighbours Cork were ruthlessly put to the sword as he gave an exhibition of forward play with 10 points scored off both feet , while Galway were taken to 1-05 from play. One of the stars of the 2014 campaign, Horan and company will feel if they can curb the Killarney Legion man's influence on the game they will have one foot in the final. - See more at: www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-games/gaelic-football/our-mayokerry-dream-team-30519643.html#sthash.Bt920W6r.dpuf

Badly written and very dubious selections!
The last two paragraphs nearly sent me over the edge -
"With Colm Cooper out injured....."
"Colm who?....."
FFS - guy needs an editor badly.
