Sunday, August 3 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Quarter-Finals Kerry v Round 4A Winner, Croke Park, 2pm* - Live on RTÉ Mayo v Round 4A Winner, Croke Park, 4pm*- Live on RTÉ * If either/both Galway or Cork win their Rd 4a games, there will not require to be a quarter final draw as Kerry cannot meet Cork again at this stage and Mayo cannot meet Galway. If neither win, there will be a draw to determine which of the Rd 4a winners (Sligo, Tipperary) play which of the Provincial Champions in the All Ireland Quarter Finals. www.gaa.ie/gaa-news-and-videos/daily-news/2/2107141421-football-championship-fixture-details-confirmed/

It's brilliant that the date is set almost two weeks in advance. It was very unfair on supporters in previous years when you would only find out the date and time of your team's quarter final on the Monday before the Bank Holiday weekend. People like to make plans for bank Holiday weekends and I know in our house the doubt over the day of the Kerry game always caused grief.

Now if only we could find some way of getting 4 provincial regions of 8 teams!

idiotic to fix the games in Croker..Kerry v Galway/Tipp & Cork v Mayo would be far better suited to Limerick. Cork are notorious poor travelers especially when the hurlers are going well. Would be lucky to get 40k in Croker this day

KG, it's a good point and I'll throw in my tuppence worth....how about the following...
The top four sides in each province, as determined by their national league position are guaranteed the 'right' to compete in their current provincial championship. This will account for 16 teams. The balance of 17 teams (including NY) will drawn out of a hat and assigned to one of the provinces ....NY having to compete in a preliminary round in the group they are drawn in against the lowest ranked team in that group. Each of the groups of eight are then drawn into two groups of 4 based again on national league ranking and each team in the group plays 3 games , with the top place team in each group of 4 competing in that provinces final. The winners of the four finals go on to compete in the All-Ireland semi-finals etc.

The younger lads on the Kerry team don't have much experience in playing in Croker, so it's a good thing in my books. Anyway, the same Kerry supporters who bother to travel to Dublin will still be the only ones there if it was in Limerick .........

Most other counties would give their eye teeth for a day out in Croker. And remember not all Kerry supporters live in the Kingdom.

Anyway, the same Kerry supporters who bother to travel to Dublin will still be the only ones there if it was in Limerick ......... I'm afraid i have to disagree with you there,All of the Kerry team have played in Croker before,Travelling up to there to play to an empty stadium where you can hear every kick of the ball is no experience. Experience of Croker is facing into a wall of noise of 60k+ supporters,Not hearing the calls of your teammates because of the deafening noise,It's when you are trying to find your bearings after a mistake because the whole crowd is on your back,It's trying to kick a ball into a full hill 16,it's trying to keep your head right as you pass in the crowds on the bus on the way to Jones road. That is the experience of playing in Croker. The best preparation for that would be to play the 1/4 final in a packed ground.John Mullane was recently on the radio speaking about how different playing a game is in a full Wexford Park or Nowlan than a half empty Thurles or Croker. He said he would pick the former every time.(And that's a man who hasn't graced Croker too often) As regards the supporters ( For clarity i rarely miss any game and have only missed Mullingar & Newbridge this year) BUT i travel with a different gang most trips as cost is a major factor for alot of people. A trip to Croker is a day trip where a trip to Limerick is a job done in a few hours this would make a huge difference to families August weekend is a stupid and i repeat STUPID weekend to expect Kerry fans to travel on. There is a massive proportion of Kerry people who are involved in the hospitality/Tourism trade and August weekend is the biggest weekend of the year. A trip to Limerick could of been a great occasion for the GAA and give a little break to fans,3 of the 4 counties competing that weekend are in close proximity to the Gaelic Grounds. I genuinely can't see any pro's to putting that game on in HQ

Anyone who was at the Cavan match in Croke Park last will recall the dreary 'atmosphere' on the day but then again, the game itself didn't exactly set pulses racing....
Regarding Croke Park versus Limerick, people love to moan about The Dubs playing all their games in Croke Park but when Kerry are due to play there, we kick up a fuss!!!!
Joking aside, it probably would make sense to play the double header in Limerick.

The provincial winners should have home advantage, Kerry should have the option of playing in Killarney, there would definitely be a full house 40k, packed stadium. It would also be good for the economy of the regions

The biggest knock-out game in Killarney since the 2000 Munster Semi-Final v Cork was the Tyrone game in 2012 and there was barely 25K there!!! A home Quarter Final v Tipp/Galway wouldn't even draw 20K.

A game in Croke park will draw even a smaller crowd that weekend. The Tyrone game was not a Quarter Final, there will be more Kerry exiles in Kerry for a long weekend and if promoted in the right way will draw a large attendance. It would also give more meaning to the provincial championships. By the way the atmosphere at the Tyrone game in Killarney was awesome, also look at Wexford and Waterford last week in Nowlan Park and Kilkenny v Tipperary the year before.

If an unfancied team got to a QF and did not get to play in Croker it would be perceived that they had been denied something. Despite what a fantastic job was done with Croke Park, stadium building strategy is something I would have to criticise the GAA for. It is ridiculous that we have a situation where many counties (especially in Munster) have grounds that are seldom filled near capacity, and yet fans are expected to travel to Croker for games which don't sell out there. What I would like to see happen is a 50,000+ seater, all mod cons stadium built in Thurles. Semple Stadium is nice and near the town (something which the new PUC will never be), and there is a good bit of land around it (which gives it an edge over Limerick) so a redevelopment shouldn't be too difficult as there things go. Thurles also is the birthplace of the association so there is that historical pull. It would be a reasonable distance for supporters from many counties who feature at the business end of championships. A top-class facility there could host perhaps both AI hurling semis, and maybe even a football semi, if for example it was Kerry v Cork or Kerry v Galway. If it was a top class facility then people would be happy to go and there and wouldn't feel that they were deprived of Croke Park.

Would be lucky to get 40k in Croker this day u wont get 40k in croke pk for them pairings. 30k be the max. People based in Dublin from those counties and neutrals that stroll to croke park for games wont even be in Dublin that weekend. You would get a bigger crowd in Limerick and ease cost\travel distance for the supporters. Its a no brainer for me. Games should be in Limerick. Even if the crowd is only 35k in Limerick it generates better atmosphere than the same crowd in Croke Park I don't think its any huge plus or prestige for a player to play in an eerily empty Croke Park. I think John Mullane said as much recently. He prefers the packed provincial venues with croke park kicking in at semi final stage

I brought my 2 young boys to the Cavan match last year, they had a great time. They wouldn't have been able to go the the semi or final so I think going to Croker earlier in the year has it's advantages.

Many valid points made here by all members, corporate and premium tickets, familiarity with Croke park, neutral venues etc. The provincial championships have been devalued since the introduction of the qualifier system. Giving home advantage to the provincial winners would be some reward for their efforts, would also bring much needed economic activity to the regions. As bomber pointed out anyone who was at the Cavan match in Croke Park last will recall the dreary 'atmosphere' on the day. I would also make the point that neutral venues dilute the crowd and atmosphere.

Watched the gane Tipperary v Galway today. Basically a very even game. A little bit of craft won it for Galway. For all they have won at underage level Tipperary have a lot to learn. Sometimes when a Galway forward was struggling with his direct opponent at the edge of the square the other Tipperary backs stood off their men. A quick pass, a quick point - Tipperary were always playing catch up. Galway are just an average team.
Next Sunday Kerry management should not have a game plan that gives anything away to any team we might meet later. A general instruction to play the wings, or hit it in to the corners is all that is needed. This will give the players the chance to play their own game and make it work. If they get to the All-Ireland final, no matter what game plan they have there will be times when they must make unplanned decisions, they must have confidence in their own instincts. A 1 point victory would do us fine.

Look Galway couldn't even get the basics right last night, so I think they have no chance against Kerry. Check out this clip to see what I mean balls.ie/gaa/vine-galway-responsible-for-most-mortifying-huddle-moment-ever/While we're speaking of getting the basics right, how come we haven't seen something like this from any of out lads - been a while not since Darran's goalazo so I DEMAND we produce something to top this the next day out. balls.ie/gaa/gif-sublime-skill-from-galways-shane-walsh-as-he-scores-one-of-the-points-of-the-championship/In fairness though it's fairly drool-worthy - worth the entrance fee simply to see that one bit of play - difficult enough to kill the ball itself but to be able to follow it up with getting the point with the other foot was what made it - I'm sure a fair few boys around the country will end up on their arse while trying to imitate this bit of skill - There was also Dara on Sky afterward trying to keep a straight face while saying it reminded it of himself was funny, especially with Canavan doing his best to try and have the Sky approved "banter" with Wyse and Carney not really sure what the hell was going on.

of course provincial champions should have home advantage in the q/f. in 2008 galway should have been at home in the q/f against kerry. swings and roundabouts. would have filled salthill to its 34k capacity if we were home to ye in 2008. great to see everyone writing us off next sunday given our defence is as open as the atlantic ocean. not bad for a very young emerging team to be at this stage with no chance. I would have taken that at the start of the year.

Galway conceded the 4 goals when the game was over as they were saving themselves for next week. They will present a serious challenge to us as they have a very strong midfield and some excellent forwards. Nearly took Cork out in Croke park last year and have improved a lot since.I don't think anyone here is writing Galway off, generally when that happens we lose.

Galway will pose an interesting challenge. A strong traditional midfield pairing is a rarity these days. Shane Walsh at 11 looks a fantastic footballer. Whoever is on him will have their hands full for sure. I would expect us to have too much for them on Sunday but I expect and hope that they give us plenty to think about. It's one of those games where if the lads are not tuned in (a la Down 2010) it could make for an uncomfortable afternoon. I am presuming there is no news on the injury front? With closed doors training sessions we are blind to current form. I don't see any reason to make changes to the team but I'd imagine recent training sessions could impact selection.
How we approach this game will be interesting. Was the use of a withdrawn Declan in Cork a case of horses for courses? Our tactics and performance in last year's quarter final versus Cavan bore little or no resemblance to how we performed against Dublin the next day out. Eamon has shown that he is not afraid to mix it up a bit tactically so we wait with baited breath.

It will be interesting to see how Galway set up at the back. If they allow any room for our lads then I'd expect us to tear them assunder. Mayo scored 3 goals, and Tipp 4.

You have to be constantly adjusting your tactics at the top level as otherwise any sort of decent side will simply look at what the team did in the last game and come up with a plan to stop you doing the same thing again. If you don't innovate and develop the game plan it's just reckless stupidity. There's no way Eamonn and the lads will be as naive as to think they would get away with the same gameplan two days running.
