Keanes Supervalu Killorglin County Minor Championship Quarter Final 7th Aug 2014
Mid Kerry 3-10 East Kerry 3-17
This quarter final was played in superb conditions in Glenbeigh this evening with East Kerry proving too strong for Mid Kerry.
It was the home side who got on the score board first with a free from Liam Carey, this point was cancelled out with a Paudie Clifford East Kerry point to level game with 3 mins gone. Mid Kerry got a free 45 metres out which Liam Careys shot hit the back of Conor McCarthys net 2 mins later again Liam Carey free sailed over the bar to put his side up by 4 points. 9 mins in to this half D J Murphy East Kerry was black carded and replaced by Philip Casey. East Kerry now dominating the game it has to be said all over the pitch narrowed the gap when their Captain Padraig De Brún shot rose the green flag, 3 mins later his team mate David Clifford levelled the game with a lovely point a min later David Clifford saw his shot raise the green flag and bring East Kerry a goal to the good, his team mate Shane Ryan again added another point to ensure East Kerry kept their lead. Mid Kerry’s Liam Carey cancelled out this point with a free of his own. East Kerry’s Darren Brosnan & Lee O’Donoghue responded with their own points to put 5 between the sides. Both sides were dealt a blow when Tommy Cahill Mid Kerry & Matt Rennie East Kerry were shown a red card each. The home side badly needed to get back into this game responded with Liam Carey raising the white flag twice, the home side were forced into errors by very strong East Kerry backs which drove them on with scores from Padraig De Brún (P), Shane Ryan (P) & David Clifford (G). Injury time looming and Mid Kerry needing to go into the break as near to their opponents as possible got 2 lovely scores Caolim Teahan (P) & Liam Carey (F).
Half time score Mid Kerry 1-07 East Kerry 3-07
East Kerry substituted Philip Casey with Conor Culloty, if Mid Kerry had any chance to salvage this game they needed a goal to which David Costello didn’t disappoint to bring 3 between the sides. In the 6th minute the visitors made another substitution with Dara Doherty replacing Rob Leane. The next 3 scores came from the visitors Shane Ryan (F), Ronan Buckley (P) & Conor Culloty (P). Home side made their 1st substitution Jamie Clifford replaced Aidan Cox. 11 minutes into the game Liam Carey kept the home flame burning with 2 points. Shane Ryan East Kerry cancelled out Liam’s points with 2 of his own. Mid Kerry’s John Tyther goal came at a time when they really needed to cut the deficit. Again East Kerry responded with a Free & a point from Shane Ryan, a point from Ronan Buckley & a point from Donal Lyne. With 8 minutes left on the clock it was all East Kerry the home side made 3 substitutions Cathal O’Connor for Caolim Teahan, Niall O’Connor for Danny Healy & Daniel Griffin for David Costello. East Kerry knew at this stage they were home and dry ensuring another point from Shane Ryan (F) Visitors exchanged Padraig De Brún for William Courtney with 3 mins to go and 8 between the sides Mid Kerry got a late consolation when Liam Carey ensured his shot sailed over the bar however on the night East Kerry proved to be the stronger team & ensured a place in the semi finals defeating Mid Kerry by 7pts.
We wish East Kerry all the best going forward and want to thank the Glenbeigh/Glencar GAA for the use of their facilities

Liam Carey and Jonathan o sullivan were mid kerrys main threat.Frees aside however I believe they were extremely well marsheled all night long with the later getting increasingly frustrated.

Minor Championship is down to the last four - unusual to have three club sides and only one divisional side left at this stage. Points to some very strong club selections. dingle must surely be favourites.

Disappointed to see mid kerry out of it.Put up a brave performance but just fell short to a well balanced east kerry side.Have to be favourites now. Saw them MK play KOR and not surprised they lost to EK - they lacked a scoring edge and nearly threw away the game against KOR.

Interesting pairing for the Co minor final - same two teams that contested the Minor league final a few months back and first time in a while that two club sides will contest the final I think.

Crokes v East Kerry game was a great game real end to end stuff . Crokes big guns came up trumps for them . Burns , Kiely , Gavin White , and Aaron Murphy , David Naughton , Billy Courtney , Chris Doncel , Johnny O'Leary in Goals and Adam O'Shea when he came on . Dingle will be really tough to beat . Crokes are up against it in Midfield with O'Sullivan and O'Connor from Dingle . Great to see Cathal Bambury back playing again .

Great to see Cathal Bambury back to form after his injury. Crokes looking for revenge after the league final only think for sure is that it will be a well fought game

Looking like a double header (minor & senior) for Austin Stacks Park - so the Dingle boys get to play on County Final day after all. Great opportunity to see so many of the County minor team on the big stage locally.

Does anybody know where one can find the roll of honour for the county minor and U21 championships?

Unfortunately no. They used to be up on the Kerry website and on wikipedia, but they were dumped in one of the many, many, many Kerry GAA website revamps and deleted from wikipedia. I'd have thought that a roll of honour would be fairly basic stuff, but they are gone. While looking forward to this year's final, I wanted to check if either Crokes or Dingle had ever won the minor before - divisional sides traditionally dominate the minor. I doubt very much if Dingle ever did, they would usually have been part of West Kerry. I thought that the Crokes team that included Luke Quinn, Mike Moloney, etc. had won a minor around 2004 but I'm told that they have never won it; that was a minor league final v strand road. I think they have won one U21 county championship around 1987 that became the basis for the 1992 All Ireland winning team. Completely open to correction on that, I don't know.

Crokes were lucky enough to beat South Kerry in Caherciveen, Dingle should win this one I would think?

Himself - yes I think divisional sides win the minor championship more frequently. Checked the Crokes website and their roll oh honour section is "under construction". Could not find a current Dingle site (last update July 2013). Was wondering how long it has been since two club sides contested the final. Kerrygold - Crokes have had fortune on their side in the earlier rounds but they did make the league final (lost to Dingle) earlier this year. They have a decent side and could make a game of it but Dingle are strong favorites. In fact I suspect the number of defeats this Dingle side have had since they first started out as U12's are few and far between. Losing at Feile as U14's is the only I can recollect.

Either Dingle or Crokes will be the sixth club side to win a minor county championship. Stacks info from Wikipedia has them winning two titles 69, 80, John Mitchells have three according to theirs (54,58 & 61), Laune Rangers with 5 (77,87,88,89 & 95), Gneeveguilla 85 and most recently Kilcummin in 2009. Not aware of any other club sides to have achieved this but open to correction. Certainly correct though that in last 40 year only 8 titles, 20% have been to clubs, in this time South Kerry were the defeated opponents to Gneevguilla and Kilcummin and think that Laune Rangers beat them a few times also. So with certainty can say it's the first all Minor Club final in 40 years anyway.
Best to luck to both teams involved.

Fairly sure the Kerins O Rahilly team with David Moran, Tommy Walsh combo won the minor championship about 6-7 years ago. Anybody willing to throw in results from years gone by and we can see if we can come up with an honours list.
