Best of luck to our senior hurlers who play Derry this Saturday at 1pm in Austin Stack Park. Kerry should be favourite for this competition after winning 2A League, as far as I know John Griffin & Mikey Boyle are the only two injuries. Would be great for the team if there was a great crowd in Tralee to support them.

I wonder have we our mercenaries available for Sat ,or is like the last day against Offaly when the Tip guy decided to stay at home and play a game in Tipperary,we have plenty hurlers of our own ,don't need mercenaries who play when it suits them. Best of luck to Kerry.

winning the christy ring would cap a great year for the kerry hurlers, they seem to be a step above everyone in this grouping. perhaps the powers that be would give the winners a 1/4 place in the mccarthy cup[all ireland]. this would entice the carlows and westmeaths and london back into the christy ring thereby raising the standard

Christy Ring Cup – Round 1 Kerry 4-31 Derry 0-11
An easier than expected win for a rampant Kerry side as they overwhelmed visitors Derry at Austin Stack Park. Kerry had their passage to Round 2 well and truly booked by the break at which stage they led by 2-18 to no score and despite the fact that Derry upped their game considerably in the second period, Kerry eased their way to tomorrow’s draw with 12 different players getting on the scoresheet.
Kerry, who lined out with Darragh O’Connell replacing John Griffin at midfield, were quickly into their stride and had 12 points on the board from the likes of the Boyles, Mikey and Padraig and Shane Nolan, before Nolan struck for Kerry’s first goal in the 22nd minute. Kerry reeled off 6 further points but Colm Harty had the last say of the first half when he cut in from the left to strike to the roof of the net to give Kerry a 24 points interval lead.
Kerry added two more points on the resumption before Derry’s Alan Grant opened their account in the 37th minute. Derry did improve their marksmanship and had their first point from play in the 43rd minute but Kerry continued to pick off the points to lead by 2-27 to 6 points before Daniel Collins poked the ball over the line for the homeside’s third goal in the 57th minute. Derry did score three in a row but Padraig Boyle put the final nail in the Derry coffin with a goal just before the call of time.

Some more positive comments about the hurlers.
By Paul Keane Tipperary legend Brendan Cummins claims Kerry could return to the Munster hurling championship within two years if their potential is properly harnessed.
But the Kingdom goalkeeping coach fears the progress currently being made “could be lost in the coming years if they don’t get an opportunity”.
The two-time All-Ireland medallist helped Kerry to win this year’s Division 2 league title and they gave Offaly a major scare in the play-off for promotion to Division 1B.
Eamonn Kelly’s side are also through to the last four of the Christy Ring Cup and, according to Cummins, are making the sort of progress that puts them in line for full Championship status. Kerry haven’t played in the Munster championship since losing heavily to Cork in 2004 though Cummins is adamant that they are onto something big right now.
“They are in a position now where if they got enough work into them over a sustained year or two with the management team that is place, they would certainly justify being in the Munster championship,” said Cummins. “I have no doubt about that. The likes of Shane Nolan and these lads, from watching them play, I tell you, you won’t see a better forward in the country.
“The scenes after Kerry won the Division 2 final, I haven’t seen anything like it in a long time. It was just amazing. The players had put in such an effort.
“Certainly, hurling with the bigger guys would help improve the structures that they have now. But I think that work could be lost in the coming years if they don’t get an opportunity.”
Cummins is facing his first summer since 1993 outside a Tipp senior set-up, having retired last year. He was appointed as Kingdom coach over winter by fellow county man Kelly and admitted it’s been an “education”.
“To see the amount of work those lads put in has been an education to me,” continued Cummins. “The Kerry lads, 25 or 30 of them, train away. It’s just as intense as what I’ve seen from Tipperary teams trying to win an All-Ireland.”
Cummins’ native Tipp will open their Munster championship account on Sunday week against Limerick, a day after Kerry play their Christy Ring Cup semi-final tie.
It will be a novel weekend for Cummins after two decades of playing action with Tipp. Cummins accepted that Tipp underachieved in his time and said they need to show greater mental resolve at key stages in big games.
“It’s a challenge all the time for us in Tipp, coming down the home straight, that we finish the job,” said Cummins, speaking at Croke Park at the launch of Damian Lawlor’s book Fields of Fire — The Inside Story of Hurling’s Great Renaissance. “We haven’t done it since 2010 in the All-Ireland final.
“It has been a criticism levelled at us and it’s justified because history books show we haven’t been going that well in games in the last 10 minutes. Eamon (O’Shea) would have spoken all the time about players playing with freedom and when they are in that 10 minutes, that they don’t tense up, that they attack the finish line.”

...I was the Cork waterboy that day in 2004 and they didn't even put up the scoreboard... Cork won 4-19 to 1-07. It was similar to the Milltown-Malbay Massacre in 1979. Kerry beat Clare 9-21 t0 1-09. Amazinly this was the highest score Kerry conceded that year. Dublin could only manage 1-08 in the Final. Kerry scored 1-07 yet the great Kilkenny could only score 0-09 against Cork in the Final. They only scored 0-02 in the 2nd half both from placed balls. Kerry scored 1-01 in the 2nd half against Cork. It wasn't so bad looking at it that way!!!

The Bomber and a few others snook back to Milltown Malbay and coached the locals on the quiet. The locals thought the world of them for that. Twas a sort of "reparations" for the holocaust visited in Miltown on that 9-21 day.

Surely Kerry would be better off in the Leinster c'ship round robin with Antrim, Laois, Carlow, etc. than the Munster c'ship?

Christy Ring Cup Senior Hurling Championship Semi Final Kerry 3-20 Mayo 1-18
Kerry wasted very little time in booking their place in the Christy Ring Cup Final on Saturday next in Croke Park (4pm) at Elverys McHale Park Castlebar this afternoon. From the throw in Kerry set about their task and Shane Nolan had the ball in the Mayo net inside the opening 20 seconds and followed up with a point from Darragh O’Connell, who had started in place of Tom Murnane, to give the Kingdom the perfect start. Kerry went on to register 1-6 on the scoreboard before Mayo, who lined out without their main talisman Keith Higgins, opened their tally and the pick of those scores was a 70metre free from goalkeeper Tadhg Flynn. Kerry’s second goal came in the 21st minute when Padraig Boyle collected a long clearance from Thomas Casey to rattle the net and Davy Butler got in for Kerry’s third goal just before the break to leave the visitors leading by 3-14 to 0-5 at the break.
Kerry continued to pick off their points on the resumption but Sean O’Regan goaled for Mayo in the 40th minute to leave the score 3-18 to 1-7. Kerry introduced Keith Carmody and Philip Lucid but went 18 minutes without a score as the likes of Kenny Feeney whittled away at the Kerry lead and there was just 8 points between the sides when Kerry captain John Egan got Kerry back on the scoreboard.

Not to be picky about it but Mayo outscored us 1-11 to 2 pts in the last half-hour ? Was there a big wind or something ?

Was there a big wind or something ? Mixture of things. Bit of a wind, helped Mayo pop over a few early scores. Then they got a scrappy goal, and Kerry switched off completely. In the first half Midfield and Half Backs dominated (Darragh O'Connell and Dineen were magnificent in their reading of the game), but in the second both lines were passed by because of the wind. Half forwards were cleared out by their men in the second half. Shane Nolan and Mikey Boyle lacked the passion to get on the dirty ball in the half forwards, so the ball was coming back as quickly as it went in. Referee stopped pointing for Kerry as well. Every free for 30 minutes of the second half went in Mayo's favour and the Kerry forwards hit some shocking wides. A win is a win, but Eamon looked very angry at stages in the second half and there was an audible squabble between the goalkeeper and one of the half backs over loose marking. Not that it was all negative. Play like we did in the first and we could compete well with the Offaly's/Laois/Antrim/ Wexfords of the game. First touch was super. Great control and point taking from out the field was top class.

The media's in-depth analysis of this competition continues unabated. According to the Examiner yesterday, the Christy Ring Final is between Down and Kildare next Saturday in some place called Cork Park.
rte.ie has Mayo playing Kildare, but at least they have the venue right.

Typical approach from the national media, they couldn't care less about these competitions,Im just waiting for the 5 minutes highlights from the three finals on next Sundays Sunday Game, last year they talked more about the possibility of a combined Ulster team playing in the Liam McCarthy rather then talk about the Christy Ring Final,
Have to say though the local media are doing a great job with hurlers,Terrace talk had a great interview with Kerry manager Eammon Kelly a few weeks ago and last night they had Shane Nolan on and Weeshie wants Kerry captain John Egan to come in for an interview next Monday night,
Next Saturday's game is on live on Radio Kerry.

Anthony Fealy Causeway 26. Giles O’Grady Ballyduff A lot of changes since 2010 where Kerry lost a classic match to Westmeath in the Christy Ring Final..... Westmeath 2-16 Kerry 1-18 By Diarmuid O’Flynn for the Irish Examiner newspaper Monday, July 05, 2010 ANOTHER Christy Ring title for Westmeath, their third since winning in the inaugural season of 2005, cementing their position as the best of the teams-in-waiting beneath the top tier. Heartbreak though for gallant Kerry, beaten by a superb injury-time point from young Westmeath substitute Andrew Dermody but denied seconds earlier what appeared a clear, potentially game-winning, free for a Westmeath foul handpass well within scoring range for free-taker Darragh O’Connell – then denied again seconds later of any opportunity to equalise as referee Tony Carroll from Offaly blew for full-time immediately on the subsequent puckout. “The throw-ball is for ye to call,” said a bitterly disappointed Kerry manager John Meyler, “but he also played only 36min 8secs, that’s with three substitutions by us and three more by them in the second half – surely that was a couple of minutes on its own? There should have been at least three minutes.” Had it been another couple of minutes of injury-time, had it even gone to the extra-time that had looked on the cards as two talented, totally committed, well-coached teams which were locked together for the final ten minutes of what had been a gripping contest, no-one would have complained – this was outstanding entertainment, hurling as it should be played. Though playing into a stiffish breeze it was Kerry looking the better side in the opening half, 0-4 to 0-1 ahead after 11 minutes. They were still two points in front at the break, 0-12 to 1-7, despite shipping that goal a few minutes before the break after razor-sharp corner-forward Dan Carthy latched onto the break from a long Pat Burke puckout, gave Bernard Rochford no chance from close range. Six scorers the Kingdom had from play in that half, midfielder John Griffin joining John Egan, Michael Boyle, James Flaherty and Shane Nolan on the sheet, with the sixth forward, Gary ‘Boxer’ O’Brien doing really well as a set-up man. A sign of the balance in both sides, however, Westmeath had an even greater spread of scorers, all six forwards contributing, midfielder Joe Clarke also with a point. Very little between them then as the sides changed ends, and thus it continued for the first ten minutes after the resumption. Westmeath did manage a second goal in the 39th minute, Paul Greville this time, in the other corner, but needing (and more significantly, getting) three opportunities before he finally converted, again from close range. Kerry, however, had four points in that same period, three from the blade of youngster O’Connell, the fourth from the other wing-forward, hard-working John Egan, just about keeping their noses in front (0-16 to 2-9). Then came a Westmeath purple patch, five points on the trot taking them into the lead for the first time, the Kerry challenge looking shot, four points adrift. To their credit, however, they came back, substitute Shane Brick (still not fully recovered from a lingering hamstring injury) goaling from the rebound after his own fiercely hit 20m free was saved, then Michael Boyle – swapped to full-forward with Gary O’Brien – with the equaliser in the 63rd minute. Five fiercely contested but fallow minutes followed, before midfielder Mike Conway put Kerry ahead with a fine point in the 68th minute – back in the driving-seat, then? Credit to Westmeath, however; backs to the wall, they responded like champions, and it was veteran centre-forward Brendan Murtagh with the equaliser from a 38m free, then the precocious Dermody with the cool winner. “Heart-stopping stuff,” said Westmeath manager Kevin Martin, former All-Ireland winner with Offaly – “If I didn’t have a heart-attack today I’ll never have one. Brilliant stuff, right to the end. Kerry were much the better team in the first half but we hadn’t hurled – I knew there was more in them. We went four points up in the second half, I thought we were cruising, I thought we’d drive on and win by more, but in fairness to Kerry they dug deep, came back into it, and there was only a puck of a ball in it at the end.” One puck. “We had chances near the end,” said Meyler, “A few bad wides, but we were really working hard. It was just that little spurt they had where they got 1-4 or whatever (the five points between the 45th and 56th minutes); we clawed it back to go level, then went ahead, and I thought we’d drive on from there. A few calls then, the goal disallowed (66th minute, Gary O’Brien), I thought that was the turning-point, if we’d got that we would have driven on.” They didn’t on Saturday, but with standards improving across the board in hurling (evidenced in the high quality of hurling on offer in the earlier Lory Meagher and Nicky Rackard finals) both sides should certainly drive on from this. Scorers for Westmeath: D Carthy 1-2; P Greville 1-2; B Murtagh 0-4 (1f); S Bardon 0-3; J Clarke 0-2; E Loughlin, B Lahorte, A Dermody, 0-1 each. Kerry: D O’Connell 0-8 (6f); J Egan 0-3; S Brick 1-0; M Boyle 0-2; J Griffin 0-2; J Flaherty, S Nolan, M Conway, 0-1 each. Subs for Westmeath: P Dowdall for Lahorte, 34; C Jordan for McCormack, 35; A Dowdall for Loughlin, 52; A Dermody for Bardon, 66. Kerry: S Brick for Flaherty, 48; C Harty for Nolan, J McCarthy for Fitzgerald, both 60. Referee: T Carroll (Offaly)

with all the bad weather forecast for the weekend it will bring the winning score down and suit the physicaly stronger kildare team. but kerry should benefit from the open spaces of croke park and with their experience of previous finals should win.
