If Mid Kerry win the county championship and Glenbeigh/Glencar win Mid Kerry then they will appoint Darran again. The 'right thing to do' doesnt really apply to local GAA club politics.

If it was me and i thought Darren would not make the team, id appoint Gooch as captain. He is the heart and soul of the squad.

If Mid Kerry win the county championship and Glenbeigh/Glencar win Mid Kerry then they will appoint Darran again. The 'right thing to do' doesnt really apply to local GAA club politics. Glenbeigh/Glencar could appoint Pa Kilkenny. Darran had his turn in 09. I would expect Donnachadh to get it if any other club wins the Mid-Kerry champ (and Mid-Kerry win). On the matter re subs - I don't think the rule written changed at any point. After the 2013 Munster final Eoin Brosnan collected the cup, despite not starting. Then this year, we had O'Leary still being seen as captain of sorts. I am glad Fionn is officially listed, as in my eyes he was the captain. The County Champions picking the captain has always caused problems, but at least with the way it was done before it was definitive: if you didn't command a starting berth you were not captain. People forget that Bryan Sheehan was nominated captain in 2006, but as he was not a starter then, the idea of him putting a hand on the cup/making a speech did not arise. I feel that the blurring of the lines over the last 2 years is wrong and will cause trouble down the line. It may even lead to the end of the practice of the county champions nominating the captain.

I thought I saw on somewhere Fionn Fitzgerald's name on the list of captains in Croke Park I think. Or maybe I just dreamt that.
it's nice to have such things to consider as the monsoon rains pour down in Kerry.

"The County Champions picking the captain has always caused problems, but at least with the way it was done before it was definitive: if you didn't command a starting berth you were not captain." I'm afraid that has never been the case and it has frequently led to problems. Mike Hassett started 1997 as team captain and was a sub for the All Ireland Final - unbelievable as it sounds, he didn't even get an All Ireland medal. Eoin Brosnan was the Crokes nominee for captain in 2001 but wasn't making the team, Seamus Moynihan captained the team up until the Meath game, which Eoin started and captained....and Kerry were hammered. Plenty of Kerry fans put two and two together and suggested that Kerry played poorly because of taking the captaincy off a legend and giving it to a novice (in that case 2 + 2 = around 14; the simple fact is that we were in disarray and Meath were good). The 2006 captaincy alternated between Eoin Brosnan and Declan O'Sullivan, who were vying for the same spot on the team. There was a suspicion that Jack O'Connor was biased towards O'Sullivan (the most nonsensical nonsense ever put forward on this planet; George Bush would be ashamed of such utter stupidity)and Kerry fans actually booed O'Sullivan in the 2006 game against Cork. Mickey Ned O'Sullivan is always listed as the winning captain in 1975 but actually it was Pat Spillane who lifted the Cup, Mickey Ned had been concussed earlier in the game. Kerry's legendary 1957 defeat to Waterford (who were actually a good team anyway, they beat Cork as well in those couple of years) was partly because a few prominent players withdrew from the Kerry panel, they felt that the captaincy wasn't being rotated fairly. Mind you, one of the coolest stories ever in Kerry GAA are about the Kerry captaincy. In the 1924 Munster semi-final against Clare, republican John Joe Sheehy was on the run. Free State captain Con Brosnan and die-hard republican Joe Barrett lined out with Kerry against Clare and had brokered an agreement - just before the ball was thrown in, Sheehy emerged from the crowd, taking off a jumper to show his Kerry jersey, and took his place on the team, disappearing into a supportive crowd after the final whistle. Kerry won that All Ireland. Seven years later Kerry were setting out on a three-in-a-row campaign. Joe Barrett, the nominee of county champions Rock St., instead insisted on the nomination of political rival and Kerry colleague Con Brosnan to the captaincy, republican to free stater. Echoes of the civil war rumbled on for many years, but they were only ewchoes; that moment healed an awful lot of hurts. By the way, Kerry won that All Ireland, Con Brosnan lifted the Sam Maguire, and Joe Barrett lifted it a second time to complete the four-in-a-row a year later.

I love that last, always my favourite. I was surprised that Sean O Sullivan wasn't nominated for 2009 as my recollection was Glenbeigh didn't win the Mid Kerry championship, thankfully that didn't cause any issues going forward. Sometimes it works out perfectly but even in the last 15 years it's caused far too many problems. It's something I don't see changing soon

I really like the tradition but there needs to be a clear rule when the captain doesn't start.

Great stories Himself, just one point it was Colm Cooper that alternated the captaincy with Declan in 06 no Brosnan.
Fully agree with Annascaul there,if captain isnt going to be starting then it falls back to next man in line just like it did with Declan in 06 when it could have been Bryan Sheehan but common sense left it to Declan as he was starting.

ffs himself, I said that the rule had always caused problems, I don't know what you are contradicting me on. I merely said that the rule as it applied before was clear - if you didn't start the game you were not captain, and if that game was a final, you were not lifting the cup.
Good post otherwise! 1957 in particular sounds farcicial.
The Fionn Fitz/O'Leary thing wasn't problematic I'm sure, as O'Leary is a senior Crokes player. Trouble is going to happen when a captain is nominated who isn't starting, and doesn't have a clubmate in the squad. It's all well and good to say that the captaincy should revert to the next man starting, and I agree, but the Crokes have set a precedent here.

I met and spoke at length with Micheal O Muircheartaig about nine years ago just after he was after managing the Underdogs against the Kerry team and beating them. He said to me that "Donaghy was a natural born leader and would make an outstanding captain some day". I hope he gets a chance to conform Micheals prediction and leads Kerry in 2015' I would think this would be his last year and he would put everything he has to offer on the table, I know from listening to players on the Kerry team and his club team that he is a charismatic and inspirational figure to have in the dressing room, I think he would be man to get us over the line in our fight to retain the Canister in 2015, I will admit that my eyes are tinged with black and amber glasses ?⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. 20 years is a long time ? I recommend this book. Donaghy comes very well out of it. www.goodreads.com/book/show/926027.Paddy_on_the_Hardwood

KOR beat Kilcummin today in the relegation play-off. Anyone there? Any reports on it? Rahillys were deserving winners but made heavy weather of it, kicking 5/6 wides in the first half when aided by the breeze- they led 0-5 to 0-4 at the break. On the resumption when level @ 6 points each, Rahillys took over with David Moran dominant and with 10 mins left led by 0-9 to 0-6; KOR were on top in defence where Cormac Coffey was outstanding with good support from David Murphy & Tommy Begley; 3 further points to Kilcummins solitary score saw Strand Rd win on a score line of 0-12 to 0-7.

I would expect that both teams will probably make at least one change for Sunday's match mid kerry will surely start carey maybe sean sullivan although sean could be held in reserve to come on if forward line is struggling. Will stacks start William Kirkby or use his experience from the bench

I think they will start him as they need Donaghy inside, if nothing else he will keep the whole Mid Kerry back unit closer to their post. There are a couple of great battles in this one, is it being televised ?.

KOR beat Kilcummin today in the relegation play-off. Anyone there? Any reports on it? Full Match report and photos here traleetoday.ie/relief-for-orahillys-as-they-avoid-relagation/Kerins O’Rahillys 0-12 Killcummin 0-7 A LATE flurry of points secured senior championship football next year for Kerins O’Rahilly’s when they beat Kilcummin in this relegation playoff match. Played out in front of a couple of hundred hardy souls in Castleisland on Sunday, if the Blues lost they would have had to face Currow for a final chance to maintain senior football for 2015. “It’s great to get this game out of the way and not go down to the final game so we’re just delighted and I think we deserved it over all,” said Kerins O’Rahilly’s manager, Barry O’Shea. “In the first half we were disappointed to be only a point up, but the guys showed great guts. In fairness, Cormac Coffey and David Moran had won All-Ireland medals this year, they could have taken it easy, but those were the guys that drove us on in the second half,” said O’Shea. “To have the experience of John O’Connor coming off the bench was important. We knew it was going to be tight and tough, so you need those type of guys who are going to hold onto the ball and be smart with it,” said O’Shea. “We’ve a young team, so hopefully we can keep them together now and not be in this type of situation again in the future,” said O’Shea. For the first half, Kerins O’Rahilly’s had the breeze at their backs in treacherous conditions in Castleisalnd and it was clear on arrival this was not going to be a day for open football. A number of stoppages as well in the first half sucked any momentum that was beginning to develop. On balance, O’Rahilly’s had the better of play, but their game was marred by numerous missed chances. In the first half, O’Rahilly’s racked up six wides to Kilcummin’s one, which tells its own story. Despite this being a dogged affair, a bit of quality did break through. With five minutes left in the half, Jack Savage notched up an excellent score. Getting onto a pass out of defence by Ross O’Callaghan, he judged the bounce well and with the Kilcummin defender stuck to him like glue he swivelled a few times to earn him the space to knock it over from 30 yards. The half ended with O’Rahilly’s in front, 0-5 to 0-4. At the break, John O’Connor was introduced for the blues. This would turn out to be a key move in the match. The forward used all of his experience and craft to gain O’Rahilly’s a real foothold in the match. Tommy Begley got his first of two scores at the beginning for the Blues, the corner back energetically getting forward down the flank and clipping the ball over the bar. Kilcummin’s, Jamie O’Sullivan was proving to be a real thorn in O’Rahilly’s side. The centre forward who kicked five of his team’s seven points, was in truth, their only real scoring threat. After the some tit for tat scoring in the second half, the winning of the game came with five minutes to go when O’Rahilly’s scored three points in three minutes to put them five clear. First, Cormac Coffey came storming out of defence and played a one two with Sean Walsh and sliced the ball over the bar emphatically from 20 yards. This was followed by another score from Jack Savage and when Barry John raised his fist when after scoring the final score of the game it was clear their was no way back for Kilcummin. Man of the match: Kerry All-Ireland winning minor, Cormac Coffey was outstanding from wing back. A bundle of energy, he attacked every ball with purpose and intensity right to final last whistle. Nabbed himself a well deserved score as well. Game Changer: John O’Connor, coming off the bench swung the tide in O’Rahilly’s favour. Any bit of sloppiness they had was eliminated by his calming influence around the middle. He settled the blues and pushed them towards victory. Referee: Castleisland’s Tom McCarthy, didn’t have a bad day and was determined to let the game flow as best he could, a tricky task, given the conditions and stakes involved. Kerins O’Rahilly’s: G Kissane, M Tierney, G O’Grady, T Begley, D Murphy, R O’Callaghan, C Coffey, D Moran, K Walsh, J Ferguson, Jack Savage, K O’Mahony, G O’Connell, B J Keane, Ronan Quill. Scorers: J Savage 0-5 (1f), B J Keane 0-2 (1f), T Begley 0-2, G O’Connell 0-1, D Moran 0-1, C Coffey 0-1. Subs: J O’Connor for K O’Mahony, C Sayers for G O’Connell, S Walsh for R Quill, M Donnelly for R O’Callaghan Kilcummin: B Kealy, S Brosnan, D Maher, J Devane, C O’Leary, D O’Leary, T Cooper, K Gorman, D O’Leary, K Gorman, S McSweeney, K Teahan, J O’Sullivan, N Duggan, G O’Leary, K McCarthy, T Brosnan. Scorers: J O’Sullivan 0-5 (2f), G O’Leary 0-1, K McCarthy 0-1. Subs: I Devane for D Maher, E O’Sullivan for K McCarthy.

Can anybody fill in the gaps with regard to the formation of the three Tralee clubs in the 1920's. The original club in Tralee appears to have been Tralee Mitchels who won 9 county championships before 1919. There was no County Championship between 1920 and 1924 and the 1925,26&27 champions were Tralee Division. Austin Stacks appear in 1928 with their first title. Reading Ryle Dwyer in this weeks Kerry's Eye (article on the Austin Stack) he suggests the three clubs existed in the early 1920's.

I see Dr crokes are favourites to win the munster club title when they may not even be in the competition I'd have Cratloe ahead of them whether they're in it or not, seems their time is coming where Crokes days have passed at All-Ireland level. Cratloe were unlucky last year and in a move reminiscent of Transfer Deadline Day they've added John Galvin to their ranks, he's not coming just for a day out.

Onlykerry.
I think the following is fairly accurate history that you ask about. Hope this answers some of your questions:-
1910 Mitchels competed in both Football & Hurling. 1911 Mitchels and Parnell both competed in the Football & Hurling. 1912 two clubs from Tralee competed in the hurling championship for the first time: Mitchels and Parnells. 1913 both clubs competed in the Hurling 1914 both clubs competed in the Football. 1915 No championship. 1916 Mitchels competed in Football. 1917 Mitchels competed in Football – Parnells in hurling. 1918 Mitchels competed in Football – Parnells in hurling. 1919 Mitchels competed in Football – Parnells in hurling. 1920 Mitchels & Oakpark competed in Football in football - abandoned. Parnells competed in hurling. 1921 Not held. 1922 Abandoned after Michael Collins death. 1923 Not held. 1924 Abandoned. 1925 A Tralee team competed in the Football & hurling. 1926 A Tralee team competed in the football. 1927 Not held. 1928 Strand St., Rock St. & Boherbee competed in both Football and Hurling.

Mandad - thanks. Knew the various clubs but not 100% on when they started out. Any idea if the three clubs had been in existence before 1928? Interesting that an Oakpark team played nearly 60 years before Na Gael founded.
