Cant believe Marc in nearly 34. I hope they suspend the current idiotic system of selecting the Kerry captain for a year and make him captain in 2015 and it might persuade him to play in 2015 aswell

I agree completely on the captain selection process, I started a thread on it a year or so ago too, though from memory the posters had mixed feelings on it. My view is that the Captain should be the combination of the strongest player with strongest positive personality that commands respect and who guarantees leadership on pitch and in dressing room and ultimately welds unity. There are 3-4 players who fit that template: Gooch, Marc, Dec and maybe Donnacha. Regarding who is likeliest to most positively influence the game, for me it's Colm every time. Marc would be next and while I pray he stays for 2015,I wouldn't like the captaincy to decide that If Gooch was unavailable God forbid, he would be the obvious choice.
Never mind all that day dreaming though, reverting to type we'll know likely by final whistle in county final next November.

Most of the Kerry young guns have got a run out in the Mcgrath Cup. Think the Mayo game is the prime game to give Leary, Casey, possibly Looney a chance to see if they have anything to offer squadwise come championship. They have been around the squad / training panels long enough now. If they are up to it well and good but if not time to say adios and cut them loose and stick with the younger brigade of the likes Stephen O Brien etc

If no crokes fella makes it myt be marc as captain i would imagine fionn fitzgerald will make the team comfortably. but maybe they wont want the same situation as eoin brosnan in 2001 and feel fitzgerald would be too young for the job. I would much rather see marc se captain for the coming year in the absence of the gooch.

Looney was taken off the last day, very poor. Casey plays with his head down too much. O Leary can contribute something, but probably not enough for starting 15 role.

I See Tony Leen made a suggestion that's a bit left field on today's examiner. Mark at 11 anyone? He certainly has the football for it and is used to playing there for An Ghaeltacht. I feel Eamon needs to pull a rabbit or two out of the hat this year, ala Donaghy in '06 and Mike Mac in '09. Might it be worth a go? Thoughts anyone...

Yeah crossed my mind too......but you'd be leaving yourself well short at the back if you did that. In defence, aside from Marc all we have is potential! great potential in Crowley + Fionn, Griffin has yet to prove himself and Enright is coming off of a bad year in 2013. Hopefully Killian will return without problems, but as we've seen he isn't a great option @cb, those defenders need someone like Marc to marshal them and bring them on....o and Kiely could probably do with Marc's presence too!!! If Lyne can keep himself from any more inter-pro games!!!! he could free up Donnacha to take on some more attacking duties.

Things really begin to hot up from here on in. Games against Mayo, Tyrone and Kildare in the next few weeks will make us or break us in terms of maintaining our division one status. Eamon will be heading to Castlebar next week knowing that we will need a result. James Horan will be thinking the very same thing. Whoever loses next Sunday will be pointless and thus, favourites for relegation. I would expect to see Marc O Sé returned to the back line, hopefully at no6 or on the wing. I would love to see Bryan Sheehan back in action soon, the man has been plagued by injuries in the last couple of years. However, he has the class to make the no 9 or 11 position his, granted a clear run at things. Johnny Buckley will be well suited to conditions next Sunday and he should be able to bolster the midfield, which has been floundering in the 2 games so far. Up front, our half forward line has been our Achilles heel and it's vital that we get more loose ball than Mayo. Do that and we will have a chance. Mayo are a strong outfit, very hard to beat in Castlebar. Our performance there last year was abysmal. We have lost both of our games, by a score or two. With scoring averages to think of, a win next Sunday will hopefully create the momentum required to kick start our season. Looking forward to seeing what kind of team is picked for next Sunday.

Does anybody know what's latest on Kieran Donaghy. I read Darran o' Sullivan, Marc o Se and Dec o 'Sullivan are back in training along with Crokes contingent.
What is the expecatation level on Donaghy this season. Will he play midfield/FF or even half fwd like in previous season.
Surely closer to the goals and a step up to '06 has to be contemplated. We need a goal getter and big season.

The best thing Donaghy could do for Kerry this season is stay at home. Has become too slow and predictable You do know two former POTYs have retired this year...and you want to cast another aside...that's without mentioning Gooch.

That POTY in 06 was a joke. There was far more like Darragh and Marc not to mention Mike Mac more deserving

What has that POTY done in the last few years? Also with regard to attacking wing back it's a shame Darragh wasn't given player of the year that year in 06..

2011 was three years ago. And that was 1 good game from a mediocre summer. If we are going back that far and picking lads on 2011 form we are really in trouble.

Star is a vital part of the Kerry team a blind man could see that...On another note why does Fitzmaurice leave it so late in the week to name his teams?

Mayo have named their team.
Robert Hennelly (Breaffy); Brendan Harrison (Aghamore), Ger Cafferkey (Ballina Stephenites), Kevin Keane (Westport); Lee Keegan (Westport), Shane McHale (Knockmore), Colm Boyle (Davitts); Aidan O’Shea (Breaffy), Jason Gibbons (Ballintubber); Kevin McLoughlin (Knockmore), Andy Moran (Ballaghaderreen), Keith Higgins (Ballyhaunis); Adam Gallagher (Mayo Gaels), Alan Freeman (Aghamore), Michael Conroy (Davitts).
Strong middle 8 there.
Stating the obvious whoever loses on Sunday will be hot favourites to go down with Westmeath, the loser would probably need 3 wins out of the last 4 games to stay up. I think we've lost 3 of the last 4 in Castlebar so I expect a strong team to be named this evening.

Otherwise I must be beyond blind!! Vital now = Marc, Declan, Donnacha and JOD. Others like Fitzgerald, Crowley, Maher and Darren would be important. Star is in a 3rd or 4th bracket, probably 4th given how poor he has played in the past 3 seasons (11 AI final only good game of those 3 seasons). Even though I say Star isn't vital and I do believe he is nowhere near the starting 15, he could still be an important influence around the panel. Maybe what Annauscaul was alluding to was the fact that Paul, Tomas and Colm were 3 hugely experienced and influential players, which is something the Kerry panel will miss. Star at least brings that experience/influence and leadership which could be of benefit to the younger players.

Biggest surprise is probably Darren being named on the subs bench, especially since he's also in the rehabbing from injury category. Looks like the cloning operation was a success !!! - next up Cooper.
Really didnt expect to see him for a while yet. The return of Marc and the Crokes lads helps to strengthen the bench options a bit.
Will be up against it but if we could pull off a win it would be a big plus. First chance to see how Kerry react without Cooper.

Lack of proper ball winners in the forwards may, again prove our Achilles heel. Can't see us beating mayo in Castlebar, hopefully we can erase the nightmare performance of last year. Aidan is there for the taking against a powerful, direct runner. Nice to see Marc liberated to the wing, looking forward to seeing him in action there. Midfield need to up their game big time, otherwise we could be in for a long afternoon! Good luck to Kerry on Sunday, a win would be some achievement, a loss would make relegation look all the more likely.

The difference, I hope for the Crokes players, is that they might get fast ball kicked into the forward line. The Pas Laimhe of 154 is a frightening statistic for a Kerry club team - I truly hope this is not the future of Kerry football. A day for new leaders - we need them bad - someone to direct traffic and keep this team flowing. They are all young, fast and fit and have nothing to fear. Hope Eamonn is tapping into those characteristics.
Best of luck as always - the future begins now. Nunc Coepi.
