3 00 PM Allianz Football League Roinn 1 2013 Round 7 Tyrone vs.Kerry Omagh
A long lead in to this game but travel plans to be readied and a hell of a clash to be expected. I know the Cork game is just over and the positives and negatives have been pored over but truth be told this is a more exciting prospect. Cork looked disinterested and heavy legged in Tralee so hard to really judge their form. To see us beat Cork at any time at any grade is most satisfying and the old edge will always remain. But our rivalry with Tyrone has arguably become equally important in recent years. Tyrone home or away are formidable and we can surely expect a serious test after a weakened and somewhat inexperienced Tyrone team were beaten in Killarney last summer. They are probably a year or two ahead of us in rebuilding their side with new and exciting talents, the brilliant Sean Cavanagh is also back looking fitter and stronger than in quite some time and they are building nicely for the championship. Kerry are improving steadily and buoyed by the two wins will head up in good shape. All in all this should be a cracker. .

I agree it will be a good game but I doubt, as Tyrone are through to the semi final of the league and their first match in the championship is against the reigning champions Donegal, that Mickey Harte will want to risk too much in what is in effect a nothing game. I would be surprised if Harte is that short sighted. This is a good opportunity for us to sneak a win up north and hope the dubs or the rebels do us a favour.

We should neither expect nor want any favourd from Tyrone. They will not see this as a "nothing game" with both the opportunity to avenge their defeat last summer and the means to send us packing to Division 2. They would also hate to see us defeat them in Healy Park so yes - expect a cracking game -if our last two matches indicate that spring is finally coming rather than a false dawn that preceeded the Donegal game.

These headings are confusing. I thought this thread was giving directions as to how to get to Omagh.

I didn't say we are looking for a favour from Tyrone but it's a fact that we need a favour from Cork or Dublin. What I was saying is that the semi final is on the following weekend and Mickey Harte is currently not in a position to force Tyrone to win or bust. Because of this we have a better chance of sneaking a result. I didn't say it will be a handy 2 points but I don't think Harte will attach more importance to the match than he normally would because it may relegate Kerry. I hope it's a tough game because it will stand to our lads later this year to battle to retain our division one status than just to turn up and have it handed to them.

Jaysus are ye off yer pretty little heads lads. Favours or even not taking it seriously? ? ....this ain't a nothing game no matter how much fluffing around we'll hear in the run up to it. Both counties have massive championship intentions and this will used as a serious test of credentials for both us and our hosts. Throw in the rancourous rivalry on and off the field plus the nearness of their championship game with Donegal and you have the perfect storm brewing. Fitzy & co.will see this as a test of their managerial progress and also obviously throw everything into preserving our Div 1 status ....it will be a day for the flak jackets. We here in Kerry are looking at two main things i reckon.. 1. have the ould lads still the hunger, pace and desire to give it one more spin on the merry-go-round (which it seems they have) and.... 2. what of our newbies...are they good/tough/clever enough to deal with football at the highest level (the toughest tests ahead) If i were in charge of Tyrone i'd certainly target Johnny Buck, Jon Lyne, Brian Maguire, Mark Griffin etc. (if they all or any playing) to test them to the limit and probe for weakness. I completely dismiss talk of this as just another end of season league game. Regardless of who starts this will be played with the white hot intensity of a championship game........yippeeee... bring it on.

Tyrone will certainly want to win this game, the game will take on a life of its own once the ball is thrown in. This is an interesting test for where Kerry are at in the scheme of things. It should not be outside of their means to collect the points. A win will be a big result for either side, a new Tyrone side against a reasonably familiar Kerry team, with some new young players. It is difficult not to see Kerry being up for it.

I would hope that Mickey Harte doesnt take this as a must win game and Im pretty sure he wont ... We're already into the Semi of the league so I would hope that we use this game as a tester for some of the new lads !!
Dont get me wrong, both sides will want the win but considering we have at least 1 very hard match coming up in the league (who knows, maybe even 2) before facing Donegal in Ballybofey, I dont think we'll want a massively intense showdown in Omagh .... I feckin hope not anyway !!

Dermot, do ye do anything other than 'massively intense showdowns'? I suspect there may be a feeling of scores needing to be settled after last summers 'coming together'. Unfortunately, I fear there may be a lot of talking points after this game, few enough of which will relate to the football...I hope I'm wrong but as I say I suspect not. If I was in Fitzies boots, I'd be giving Declan O'Sullivan and Paul Galvin the weekend off!

It is a pity the Kerry Tyrone thing has descended into what it has become, I think Paul Galvin alluded to this also recently. The relationship between the counties leaves a lot to be desired and unfortunately demeans the game of football.

Completely agree Kerrygold.....there was a time when respect between sets of fans was a given even between these two counties. There was always an edge between ourselves and the langers but rarely anything more than some serious slagging. The Kerry/Tyrone caper is now on a different nastier level. Sad but true. I've been guilty of spouting some red mist material myself and quickly regretted it. I guess i felt infuriated by a lot of what i took to be total disrespect for Kerry football and reacted. This crack really has to end for everyones sake. The spitting/verbals/nastiness carry in our games has dragged us all down.

Maybe if he had said back in 2003 that Tyrone's football is not easy on the eye but it's very effective, or something to that effect instead of calling it "puke football", he might not have hit as many nerves. I guess it's snowballed from there really.

Or in this case - eye gouging, belts into the 'mid-riff', biting, spitting and fans punching defeated players as they exit the field in Croke Park may break my bones but puke football will never hurt me. Which is why I might skip the invitation for a cuppa and sandwich in Garvaghey (or opportunity to shown-off their new facilities) and get in and out of dodge as fast as possible.

I suppose there's a Kerry supporters bus going to this. Does anyone know any more details on this yet? It was announced at last Sunday's match that seats for this trip had to be booked on Mon 25th. Don't know if that situation has changed. I think its a bit simplistic to solely name Pat Spillane in the context which delorean has in his post. Plenty of others, in the media and outside of it, have stirred the pot and made bad situations worse. Of course there's also the outdated notion of individuals taking responsibility for their own actions but that went out with the Ark I guess.

Well if Pat had taken his beating that day with some dignity maybe things wouldn't have been so hostile from the off. I'm not excusing anybody who has done any wrong in the meantime, I just think the agro stemmed from there. The teams subsequently meeting in two All Ireland finals shortly afterwards didn't allow the hostilities to die down.

To be fair to Spillane, it was absolute rubbish that day. The diving, fouling, gamesmanship was a joke and ruined what could have been a good game of football. The nastiness started during that game, not when Spillane opened his mouth. I know Tyrone used it for the 05 final but I'm amazed that the comment is still referred to, nobody who watched or commented on it said it was a good game, it got universal criticism when it happened.

Whatever about the quality of the games the better team won that day. Kerry and Tyrone have played 5 times in my lifetime and I been at them all and on all occasions I think that the better team won. It would be great if the bitterness went out of the rivalry.

I don't doubt that Tyrone were the better team on the day, a lot of things happened though that left a sour taste and started the bitterness that has kept going. Kerry have lost to many teams throughout the years but relationships haven't soured. We've lost to Cork more than any other team in the last decade yet it hasn't turned nasty to the degree the Kerry Tyrone rivalry has, I would love if the upcoming game passes off incident free but I have my worries

Lost to Cork more than anyone in the last decade Falvers? If there's any team we've completely dominated in the last decade it's Cork. You are referencing games like league encounters (don't think there's much imbalance there either), but most likely Munster finals, and even that isn't much imbalanced?. In Championship showdowns in Croker it's been Kerry every time.
2002 - semi final 2005 semi-final 2006 - semi final 2007 final 2008 semi final 2009 final
Tyrone are the only team we have repeated Championship losses against, specifically on the biggest days. There are other things Buck mentioned that are truly shocking, but assessiong "our" part of the unpleasantness of the rivalry is it reasonable that a lot of "our" problem comes down to the fact that when it came to it in 03, 05 and 08 - we couldn't find a way to beat them, and that even now we can't park that. I don't think any county in put Kerry's shoes would have any differing reaction. The other stuff spawning from it has multiple owners from multiple places.

What I'm pointing out is that we've lost more games to Cork than Tyrone,02/06/08/09/12 in the last decade or so but we still have a healthy rivalry with them. No spitting, biting, sledging or off the ball antics. Kerry took their beatings, wished Tyrone well on their victories and came back the year after every defeat to win more all irelands. I'm sure it annoyed the Kerry players to lose the finals but no more than the ones lost to Armagh or Dublin. But the media love a story and the Kerry Tyrone saga gave a narrative that I don't think was entirely accurate. Apparently Jack came back only to win one game against Tyrone, not to win All Irelands!!!!!!

The Armagh game cos we threw it away and especially 2011 where we were simply robbed. Those two still rankle, the others - no particular complaints.

Southward - you're completely spot on re the media. They love a good story and what way to promote a good story than a bit of sensationalism. This has clearly filtered through to the players as invariably such in-depth media attention will do. It's completely unavoidable.
We will need to focus our attention away from the sideshow and concentrate solely on what our goal is which must be a win. This we have done effectively in Tyrone's back yard in particular in 09 when Ricey went Gazza on Marc Ó Sé.
Someone mentioned previously that in 03 Tyrone ruined the game with their robust style of play. Surely be to God we can move on from this match heading for its 10 year anniversary!! The same old drivel spoken of each time this fixture comes about!

Sorry Seoirse I don't. I've looked at an old edition of the Kerryman that I have here and there's no contact numbers there either. I'm sure someone on here may have the numbers and may be able to help you out.

I don't doubt that Tyrone were the better team on the day, a lot of things happened though that left a sour taste Yeah, like us winning and the fact we won the 2 AI finals against Kerry didnt make things even worse I presume Some folk just cant accept getting repeatedly beaten by as JOC said himself .. The "Nouveau riche" And btw .. Im not saying we're angles ... I just wont accept you and/or others claiming that for Kerry either !! And there are lots of people who post here who fully realise that .. I'll mention no names but you will see a couple of posters in this thread who are realistic and see it as it is .. Not through green & gold tinted glasses .... To completely blame Tyrone is stupid .. as it is to completely blame Kerry .... Both sides had a part in it !!
