Solve this poser and then you can go on to nominate what you think was the best GAA family in the history of Kerry. The emphasis would be on players playing for the county. Four brothers in this particular family captained their college in senior football. Three of them played senior for the county, three played minor and three played junior. They hold 7 senior all-Ireland medals, 1 minor, 1 junior and several munster medals at all levels. Their father also played for Kerry. They never won a Kerry championship medal though they played in many finals.

Well the greatest ever are the Spillanes, without a doubt, but we'll leave that slide for now! I'll get back to you on your question!
Between them they hold 23 All-Ireland football medals in Minor, Under 21 and Senior grades, a record no family has equalled, and few if any will surpass. Their late father, Tom, also played for Kerry and Munster.

Spillanes without a doubt the best... not sure who the first family in question is, but the O Se's are the best currently playing family

If you include all of Ireland, I'd put the Meehans on top at the moment, just on the basis that the Meehans beat the O'Sé's in the club final. If Kerry win the All-Ireland I'd put the O'Sé's on top again. Historically for the best ever GAA family in Ireland, I'd have to say the Spillanes. Not just on medals, but on performances as well. All 3 have won All-Stars. BTW, FatTom you plagiarist!!!! Your reply is very alike to... homepage.eircom.net/~templenoehomepage/patspillane/I don't know would the Murphys even win the best GAA family in Camp - the Farrells (i.e. Gene's family) and the O'Driscoll's (i.e. Bingo's family) would surely surapss them?

For South Kerry, I'd say Ned n' Maurice Fitzgerald fit the bill nicely.
Maurice speaks for himself. As for Ned, this is from the kerry gaa website:
As a player Ned Fitzgerald was a Kerry minor in 1953 and was also on the Senior All-Ireland winning panel of that year. In 1954 he won a Junior All-Ireland medal and in 1955 was a member of the All-Ireland winning senior panel that defeated Dublin. He won Senior County Championship Medals with South Kerry in 1955, 1956 and 1958 and was captain in 1956. In 1973 he retired from playing having won 8 South Kerry Senior Championship medals. Following his playing career he was chairman of the club in 1978 and 1979, he was also treasurer of the South Kerry Board and represented South Kerry as a Kerry Senior Football selector.

The Murphy's camp was indeed the answer to the first question. Their father Jack also played for Kerry. However, I think the Sheehy's of Tralee must be No. 1. John Joe won several All-Ireland medals. he played both hurling and football for Kerry and Munster. Hi sons Paudie, Niall and Sean Og won All-Ireland medals and Brian won a junior. Niall also was a stalwart Kerry hurler. The four brothers were also the backbone of arguably Kerry's best club football side. It is only fair on this forum tthat we acknowledge our hurlers also. Other great families were the Lynes of killarney, uncles of the Spillanes; The Kennellys, Ballylongford, The Hennessy's, Ballyduff, The Brosnans and Callaghans, Moyvane.

Off the subject matter slightly but the Powers have unique place in GAA. Jackie won AI's with Limerick in the 30's and 40's, Ger won plenty with Kerry and Jackies grandson and Gers nephew Stephen McNamara won one with Clare in 95. Three generations winning AI's with three different counties is unreal.

As regards All-Ireland medals the Spillanes are tops but whilst talented footballers they were there at the most opportune time. I'm sure their uncles the Lyne's would have surpassed them but for their clerical calling. I think there was at least four brothers who played with Kerry. Can anyone come up with five brothers who played for Kerry.

I know they won't compare with the Sheehy's but the Landers of Rock Street are worth a mention in any debate about great Kerry GAA families. The Hogan Stand has a nice piece on Purty, completed just after he died. There's a great story about people making their way to the All Ireland too in it. www.hoganstand.com/kerry/2002arts/july/070402.htmAlso, while on the subject of great GAA families, if we moved outside the borders of Kerry, I'd imagine the Fennellys of Kilkenny would be up there.

Cant believe anyone didnt mention the Mortimors!
For father son combinations hopefully in about 5 years we'll be saying Ogie & Brian Moran. We all know what Ogie did and I reckon Brian will be the man to step into Darragh's boots in the next few years.
Any of the other Golden Year crew have sons coming through I wonder?
Getting back to the subject, cant look beyond the Spillanes for now though.

I think that the Landers brothers of Rock Street are worth more than a mention! They are surely up there with the Spillanes. Comparing like with like gives: 12 All Irelands (against 19) 7 National Leagues (against 8) 2 Railway Cup (against 4) 24 County Champ (against 4) Total 45 (against 35)! Purty Landers was the first true superstar of GAA (as big as Pat Spillane is now ) He played both hurling and football, and is credited with investing a new cute hoor forward style of play. He was even offered contracts with English soccer teams!

Fennellys would be my pick - 5 brothers playing hurling for Kilkenny, 6 or was it 7 on the same team when their club winning the all ireland hurling championship - the equivilant of Finuge winning it - the village is that small.
David Walsh did a brilliant article in about 1992 or 1993 when Liam Fennelly captained them to the double - all about the family growing up, having a sofa in the back of the family van so they could all get to training, running out at half time in an all ireland when watching it on tv to have a puck about.......

Sean Walsh! He was an outstanding player when he played for Kerry and now his son Tommy is beginning to shine himself. Tommys on (or being considered anyway) for the county minor team and plays great football with his school and club. Although he hasnt won any major competition yet, im sure he will in the foreseeable future. Also, Seans son Barry John is coming along nicely. Extremely talented football player as can be seen with his huge achievements with the CBS. He even plays soccer on the Irish team. Lets just hope that soccer doesnt take this talented youngster away from the GAA. Also worth a mention are the Morans. Ogie was great in the good old days, Brian is a star in his own right, David is in tria;s for the kerry minors and dont forget his daughter (Denise i think) who is on the Kerru u16 girls team!

In relation to the great Kerry GAA families, I think the Lovetts from Kilmoyley are right up their with any of them !
3 brothers: Sean, Fr Xavier and Declan who gave unbelievable service to Kerry Football and Hurling for well over 25 years, winning Munster and All- Irelands at various grades in both codes. They also gave unblemished service to the Kilmoyley hurlers, St. Brendans board footballers, the Sem and other schools/colleges they were into.
True legends of Kerry GAA !

What about the darbys, stephen and seamus, recon there presence on the pitch as all-ireland winning brothers before this years final jinked us,there could be something in it,and brosnans second point, very similar to the one tom spillane kicked in the 1982 final, both wearing no.11
