FORMER Kerry star and current presenter of the Sunday Game Pat Spillane has controversially called for London to be axed from the National Leagues. "You have to ask if over the years the involvement of London in the league has been money well spent. I believe it hasn't," said Spillane.
"If yearly involvement is suppose to improve standards in the long term then I'm afraid it just hasn't happened and in these times of recessionary constraints the GAA must have a look at the situation. I still believe London should have sides involved in the Championship, but the cost to other counties and the GAA for them being in the league is out of proportion."

"You have to ask if over the years the involvement of London in the league has been money well spent. I believe it hasn't," said Spillane. think Pat is well wide of the mark here, London's participation has never been a question of money well spent. its the recognition of exiles in the area and their right to enter the competitions if they wish. we should not forget those irish abroad who's link to home is often the GAA club. and with the number of irish abroad set to rise, it may be as important as ever to maintain the link. Pat is well wide of the mark with these comments, not for the first time either!!

Like many in the media Pat's ideals are a bit screwed. When Pat was being offered junkets around the world he wasn't worried it was money poorly spent or at the expense of GAA develoment. Pat should also know that thousands are collected over seas each year for county training funds and for new grounds. Eaten bread is son forgotten with Pat. If Mr. Spillane is worried about wasting funds he should direct his criticism at those who are spending half a million on a fire works display at Croke Park.

Game cost us 35,000 but without it would be in huge finacial trouble....I believe the deal is the host county has to pay so im sure london are the same.. what harm is it causing having the exlies involved?? I was watching the Late Late Disaster a few weeks ago & its ironic that it was him that was being interviewed by Pat Kenny at the top table because other than PK I don't think there would be too many others in the audience that have any time for him.As far as I know most of the five in a row team don't talk to him anymore He should do a Graham Geraghty on it & run for election - he wouldn't be long finding out how popular he is - even in this county:o

Does he not remember that London won the Nicky Rackard cup a few years ago? and that John Mitchell's from Liverpool have made it to the All Ireland Junior Club Championship Final? These games are an important part of the cultural identity of the wild geese and we should always remember that. Plus, with the current economic situation London, New York etc will only be getting stronger

Any chance he might be flying a kite here? Its still a relatively quiet time of the year for real GAA news and Pat might be stuck for something to talk about to ensure that he will get in the headlines.
From the way that the economy is going, London might be the GAA stronghold in the not to distant future....
Was not aware that Pat had difficulties with a lot of the Golden Years team. Had heard it was just one or two but such is life...

I think he speaks to most of them, but Ogie Moran is the one who has the big problem with him. Pat criticised Ogie when he was in charge (during our years in the desert) and Ogie idnt take too kindly to it.
